DR. DOUGLAS M. SHAW
The Gandhi Nobody Knew
My Unlikely Journey to Truth and Spiritual Freedom
“I am a failure. I have pleaded for peace and we are having war.”
— Mahatma Gandhi, weeks before his assassination, 1948
Everyone knows the public Gandhi. This is the story of the man nobody knew — and the family whose lives became his answer.

Gandhi spent his life searching for spiritual freedom.
He read the Gospels. He memorized the Sermon on the Mount. He fasted, prayed, and gave everything he had to the pursuit of nonviolence and truth.
And yet at seventy-eight years old, weeks before his assassination, he wrote: “All about me is darkness. I am praying for light.”
This book is about what he was looking for. And about one family — with roots in Gandhi’s own world — who found it.
Five generations. One question. An answer Gandhi never found.
Dr. Douglas Shaw was born in India into a family whose story is inseparable from Gandhi’s world. His grandfather, Ishwar Dayal, walked alongside Gandhi — and then made a different choice.
One night, reading the Gospel of John by moonlight in a family compound in India, Ishwar found what Gandhi had spent his life almost accepting.
The Gandhi Nobody Knew tells the story of that night — and what it set in motion across five generations, two continents, and a ministry now reaching thousands worldwide.
